Following is the conclusion of a lesson I delivered a few days ago. It was at beginning of the chapter ‘Description
of Jannah’ my friend hafiz Zaid Mehtar noted it down and sent it to me. I edited it and now it’s before the reader.
“The verses of Quran give a brief glimpse into the splendour of paradise and the state of its inhabitants; although there are many verses and Ahadeeth regarding Jannah, especially in Surah Rahman Surah waqiah, Surah dahr, Surah naba’ etc, the conclusion we can obtain after reading them, is that every aspect of life in Paradise is full of peace, rest, pleasure, luxury and contentment.
There will be no difficulty in Jannah, and every whim and desire will be fulfilled by merely wishing for it.
Hence, the Quran states;
“And for you in Jannah, is whatever your souls desire, and for you in it, is whatever you call for. A gift of welcome from the Most-forgiving, the Very-Merciful” (Surah Fussilat Ayah 31-32)
When a person enters his Paradise, he will be greeted and welcomed by the angels, the servants, and the beautiful maidens, with the comforting and uplifting words of;
“Peace be upon you for the patience you observed. So, how excellent is the ultimate abode” (Surah Ra’d Ayah 24)
And with the words “سلامٌ عليكم طبتم فادخلوها خالدين”
“Peace be upon you! You have kept yourself clean and pure, so enter the Jannah to remain forever”
As one enters, he will be overcome by awe; his gaze will fall upon a vast, dense garden filled with beautiful trees, the barks of which are made from gold, the leaves of which have been created from incredible colours. The grass growing in his gardens will be made from sweet smelling saffron. Rivers will be flowing and the river banks in one’s Jannah will have soft sand, emitting the fragrance of musk. The stones in one’s courtyard will be made from pearls, emeralds, rubies and diamonds of all colours.
The great palaces of Jannah will be constructed with bricks of pure gold and pure silver, the cement between them will be made from sweet smelling musk.
From the many rivers in paradise, the jannati will have rivers of Milk, Wine and honey, with dutiful servants waiting for an opportunity to serve him.
In Jannah, one’s age will be 33 years, and he will remain at this age forever, without ageing, falling sick or growing weak.
A person’s body will be enlarged, so that he may enjoy the luxuries of Jannah. Everyone will be like sayyiduna Adam alayhissalam, who was 60 feet tall.
No excess hair will remain on one’s body, The body will be like a new born’s; beautiful soft skin, no beard, no unnecessary hair.
And the inhabitants of Jannah will be clothed in garments made from silk of all varieties. They will be adorned with jewellery made from pure jannati gold.
The Quran says:
“Gardens of eternity they enter. They will be ornamented with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their dress therein will be (of) silk.” (Surah Fatir Ayah 33)
Food in Jannah
In regards to food, one will never have the need to cook; the attendants will provide everything. No kitchen, no housework for ladies. There will be tasty tender meat of the birds of Jannah, birds which graE from the saffron and fruits of Jannah. A bird will be flying past a jannati. He will desire to have it’s meat and the bird itself will come down. He will take as much meat as he wants then the bird’s body will be replaced and it will fly away. (The size of which will be that of a bakhti camel).
Quran says:
“…And the flesh of birds that they desire” (Surah Waqiah Ayah 21)
Endless varieties of fruit will be available, many of which will resemble that of this world such as bananas, pomegranates, grapes, dates, etc. Every fruit we see in this dunya will be available in Jannah (as Ibn Abbas has quoted)
The resemblance however, is only in regards to their appearance so that one experiences more pleasure upon seeing that which he recognises. As for the taste, one cannot imagine the delight of tasting the fruits of paradise.
Thus The Quran explains;
“Every time they are given a fruit from there to eat, they will say, “This is what we have been given before”; and they will be given (fruits) resembling one another. And for them in there shall be wives purified; and there they will live forever.” (Surah Baqarah Ayah 25)
As mentioned in the aforementioned ayah, one will experience union with beautiful, pure women. These are known as the maidens of Jannah and have been created specifically to serve and wait upon the inhabitants of Jannah. The beauty and splendour of the maidens of Jannah is such, that if their saliva was to fall on the earth, the whole world will become sweet, if she was to peep into the earth her radiance will illuminate the entire earth from the east to the west. The maidens of Jannah have been nurtured in the excellence and eminence of paradise, hence their every limb will be pure and free from defect.
The size of Jannah:
The size of the smallest Jannah will be ten times the size of this world and will have 80,000 servants to attend to the inhabitants.
It is stated that paradise has 100 levels, each level is capable of catering for the whole of mankind. It is for this reason the Quran has mentioned it’s vastness as follows;
“Race with one another towards Forgiveness from your Lord and towards a paradise, the width of which spans the heavens and the earth. It has been prepared for the God-fearing” (Surah Aal e Imraan Ayah 133)
The paradise of some will be so large and vast, that it will take one 1000 years to simply explore it.
Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlwi mentions that the control a Jannati will have over his paradise, is the same as the control one’s mind has over his body.
Paradise will be home to markets, where people will gather every Friday and one will be able to shop to his heart’s content. The difference being that there will be no currency required. Everything in the markets of Jannah will be free of charge. One will not have to carry the shopping around, the attendants will do that for him.
Having mentioned the many bounties and rewards paradise contains, one of the greatest bounties, and the moment when the inhabitants of Jannah will feel joy as never before, will undoubtedly be, when they observe the countenance of Allah Azza wa jalla. While they are looking at Him, they will not turn to any other Ni’mat.
Also the ultimate joy will be, when Allah will proclaim;
‘I have assured you my pleasure and I will never become displeased with you after this’ (Hadeeth 14 p497 5626)
Hence the Quran says;
“Allah has promised to the believers, male and female, gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they shall live forever, and good homes in gardens of eternity. And Allah’s pleasure is above all. That is the supreme success.”
