Q274: Non-Sunnah clothing

Question

Is wearing shirts, pants, jeans, t-shirts, bottoms and other non sunnat clothes haraam or are we allowed to wear them? (men)

Answer

It is important to consider two things about this issue:

  1. Desirability and
  2. Permissibility.

For a Muslim, the desired attire is that which was worn by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam himself. Therefore, one must make an effort to where the sunnah clothing when going out, whilst praying salah, etc.

However, there is also permissibility, and this is where the non-sunnah clothes come in (the ones you have mentioned). The pre-requisite of wearing such clothing is that it covers the satar i.e. from the naval (included) until the knees. Although it is permissible to wear such clothing, it highly preferable that such clothing is avoided as far as possible as casual wear. Such clothing should only be worn out of necessity, such as, when playing sports, when doing exercise, or if it is part of a uniform (e.g. police uniform, etc) at work.
