Purpose of our creation

Few notes on the speech which shaykh Abdur Raheem Sb gave in London regarding the preparation of Ramazan:

(Transcript was provided by mufti usama mahmad, edited by AR)

After hamdo thanaand durood, shaykh recited the following ayah and began his speech;

We have been created so that we may worship Allah. Therefore, We have to do Amal. One can’t say that we will go to Jannah through the Fadhl (grace)of Allah so there is no point in doing Amal.

It is true that no one can go in Jannah without Allah’ s fadhl, but one should understand that Amal is also the Fadhl of Allah. Hazrat Moulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi (r.a.) used to say “Good Aamal may not be a daleel of a good Khatima, but it is a sign of good khatima”.

In the Quran Allah has said in so many places that those who believe and do good deeds, their reward will be such and such.

Amal strengthens the heart. We must stop our lay back attitude and start doing deeds.

Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (r.a.), who lived in Makkah mukarramah for over 40 years and is buried in the blessed city, was once asked “Hazrat! What is the point of doing these sit ups in Salah when we are not focused on our salah” Hazrat replied “The value of these up and downs will be understood after our eyes close (ie death) and my dear brother! what you call up and down, this is also the Tawfeeq of Allah” ie He gave us the ability to worship.

When someone tries to do some good deeds in the month of Ramadhan we tend to taunt him saying “He’s only here because of Ramadhan” We should stop this bad habit. We should encourage such people and pray for them that Allah gives them the tawfeeq to continue after Ramadhan as well.

In the khilafat of Hazrat Umar (r.a.) there was this youngster who was very pious and used to come early for Salah in the mosque. Hazrat Umar used to admire the young man for his piety. After some time, he moved to Egypt, fell in some bad company and went off track.

When some hujjaj came from that area of Egypt hazrat Umar enquired about the young man. He was informed that the young man had gone off track and his piety has slowly disappeared . Hazrat Umar was naturally grieved so he gathered those around him and made Dua for the young man. Then he wrote a letter to the young man in which he wrote the opening ayaat of Surah Mu’min:
حم …… غافر الذنب و قابل التوبة شديد العقاب ذي الطول

When the letter was delivered to the young man and he was told that hazrat umar rad had gathered everyone and made dua for him, it had a great effect on his heart so he started crying and said “hazrat umar has reminded me that Allah is The forgiver of sins and He is the accepter of repentance, but at the same time umar has warned me that Allah is also very severe in punishment” He made an intention to change his life. He moved back to Madina munawwarah and benefitted from the company of Hazrat Umar radiallahu anhu.

How to prepare for the month of Ramazan:
1) Stop all sins- music/T.V./ watching dramas etc.
2) Don’t waste time- especially on social networks such as Facebook , twitter, whatsaap etc. Make use of every moment in this blessed month.

Our Akabir were very careful in spending their time in Ramadhan. Shaikhul-Hadith shaykh Zakariya (r.a.) would recite one Quran daily in Ramadhan. Once he said that, me and my friends decided to follow in the foot steps of Imam Shafie (r.a.) and recite 2 quran a daily. At the beginning it was hard, but alhamdulillah we finally finished 60 khatams.

Also, we should encourage our women folk to recite Quran. Hazrat writes in his book fadhaile Ramadhan, after quoting the Hadith:
أتاكم رمضان شهر بركة يغشاكم الله فيه فينزل الرحمة و يحط الخطايا و يستجيب فيه الدعاء ينظر الله الي تنافسكم و يباهي بكم ملائكته فاروا الله من أنفسكم خيرا فان الشقي من حرم فيه رحمة الله عز و جل
The women folk in my house, whilst doing their daily chores, would recite 15/16 juz everyday and they would compete with one another.

3) Keep some optional fasts in Shaban so that one may become acquainted with the fast of Ramadhan. Hazrat Aisha (r.a.) says that besides Ramadhan, Rasulullah sallulahu alaihi wasallum would the fast mostly in Sha’ban.

Regarding the 15th of Shaban
(This year it is going to be on the 23rd June)
Nowadays some people say that this night has no virtue and it is like a normal night and it is Bid’ah to do Ibadah on this night because the Ahaadith regarding this matter are Dhaeef (weak)

To elaborate on this:
Firstly, Mufti Taqi uthmani Sb has mentioned ten Ahaadith regarding this night and Moulana Fadhlur Rahman Sb azami has mentioned 17 Ahaadith.
These 17 Ahaadith put together do show some importance of this night.

Secondly, shariat can be divided into two parts:
(1) Masail (halal, haram- jaaiz, najaaiz)
(2) Fadhail ( virtues of deeds, and warnings for sins)

Regarding Masail, most Masail are derived from Sahih Ahaadith. However, some are derived from Dhaeef as well such as:
Both of the above Masail are derived from Dhaeef Ahaadith.

Just to let you know Imam Abu Hanifah was given the title Imam A’zam. He was given this title because he was elder in comparison to the other 3 Imams.
Their Dates of births are as follows-
1) Imam Azam – 80 Hijra
2) Imam Malik – 94 Hijra
3) Imam Shafie – 150 Hijra
4) Imam Ahmed – 164 Hijra
These great legends have based their researches on Sheehan ahadeeth, but they have also given value to dhaeef hadith as well and where saheeh Hadith could not be found, they gave preference to dhaeef hadith Hadith over their own logic.

Regarding Fadhail, most of the Ulama are of the opinion that Dhaeef Ahaadith can be used for fadhail, mentioning virtues of some deeds.

Even Imam Bukhari holds this view as can be witnessed in his book Al-Adabul Mufrad. So, those people who keep demanding Sahih Ahaadith are wrong in their demand.

Also, demanding was the way of the kuffar as the Quran says

So, we should do Ibadah in this night such as Dua, Salatut Tasbeeh, Tahajjud, Tilawah etc.
In this night and in the nights of Ramazan we should cry to Allah over our sins.
Ibn Abi Mulaika (r.a.) was a tabi’ee and a very pious person. He would cry out of fear of Allah and wipe the tears of his eyes over his face and beard. He would say that, “I have heard that the fire of Jahannam will not burn that part of the body upon which the tears of eyes have been spread”

We should try to visit the graveyard. Rasulullah sallulahu alaihi wasallum visited the graveyard on this night so we should go at least occasionally in such a way that we don’t classify it as Fardh and start rebuking those who don’t go. Our intention should be to do Isale Thawab for the deceased and also to remember our own death.

The purpose of our creation is IBADAH so why should we stop those who are trying to accomplish this purpose.

May Allah grant us the ability to act upon what has been said. Ameen.
