Q247: Is a local shaikh better than taking bay'at through a letter

Assalamu alaikum,

I wanted to take bay’aa with a shaykh, but I was wondering if it is better to become a murid of a shaykh local so I can be in his presence from time to time (with barrier) or is it better to take bay’aa with a shaykh through a letter? I live in east-london. would I need my mahrams permission? I need to take bay’aa as soon as possible, I really want to connect with Allah more please help.
