Q595: Praying behind a salafi or a barelwi, tahiyyatul masjid during khutbah

Question:
Salaam sheikh,

I am a student at university and as you know lots of different Muslim brothers and sisters come together from lots of backgrounds, Alhamdulillah we have prayer facilities available, but many a time when it is namaz time I go to read salaah (Alhamdulillah) and find lots of different people leading salaah, often brothers leading salaah are salafis and baraylwi or arab, they do not have beards, trousers are almost always below the ankle and I’ve noticed when they do wudu, they do masah over normal cotton socks.

I admit to not having a full beard myself (make dua Allah give me hidaayah) but i know of certain conditions required of an imaam but would my namaaz be counted if I read salaah behind a salafi or baraylwi imaam? Or would I be better off reading namaaz individually?

Jazakallah

Answer: Salafees and Barelwis are within the fold of Islam. Salah behind them is valid. But do not make a habit of going to their masaajid for salah.

Also I personally feel that the Mas’alah of wiping over cotton socks is against the Ijmaa’ of the Ummah, thus Wuzu of such a person cannot be valid and therefore salah behind them has a question Mark over it.

So, in these circumstances join the jamaa’t to avoid fitnah, however, if you feel your namaaz was not valid for some reason, then repeat your salah afterwards.

Question : Subject: Taheeyatul Masjid

Assalam alaequm, My question is: can one observe Taheeyatul Masjid when the Imam is on the Minbar delivering khutba on Friday

Answer: tahiyyatul masjid is only nafl, it’s not wajib, And as far as i can remember, according to shafiee and hanbali research it is mustahabb to pray them but according to hanafi and Maliki research it wud be severly makrooh to pray namaaz while imam is delivering the khutbah, just as when namaz has started you shouldn’t pray nafal.
