Q653: Evidence for reciting Quran in a new house

Question: Is there any evidence that you should read quran or make dua gathering when moving to a new house which was owned by a non muslim.

Answer: The evidence for this is the hadith of Sahih Muslim. The Prophet (s.a.w.) has said:

لا تجعلوا بيوتكم مقابر إن الشيطان ينفِر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة

“Do not turn your houses into cemeteries, for surely Satan flees from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is read”.

Rahmah and barakah decends upon the place where a’maale saaleha are done. This is why the Sahaba used to invite Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to their homes and he would pray salah in there. Itbaan ibn Malik requested him. Anas ibn malik’s mother umme sulaym requested him and he led them in nafl salah.

Reciting Quran is also a source of barakah. Our mashaaikh have approved this method of reciting Quran and making dua for barakah in a new house. Thus it’s desirable, not fardh or wajib, but it’s not haram either.
