Q540: Reciting Quran in public

As salamu alaikum Dear Mufti Saab,

A brother and I had fikr about giving Dawah to non-Muslims in a wise way and I wanted your Noble Advice. In selected areas in our area (London) where is it legal to hold a stall or where buskers perform their music, we want to have simply 2 chairs and a table – with proper Niyyah and following Tajweed correctly one brother recites Quran using a Portable speaker (not too loud which will disturb) and every few Ayaat the other brother simply gives translation – we will read selected Surahs e.g. Surah Rahman, Naml, Taha etc. We will also burn some bakhoor nearby to make a nice envronment. InshAllah if people ask us anything we will answer and give a leaflet on Islam. Our aim is just to recite the Quran and let people hear Allah’s Words. Allah Ta’ala Gives Hidayah so we don’t have to preach. We will always get full legal permission regarding the site we use; we will not argue or shout ever. What is your Noble Advise Shiekh?

Answer: Very good idea. As they say ‘every little helps’ Also one Hadith says ‘If allah gives hidayat to one soul through you then this is better for you than becoming the owner of the whole world and whatever it contains’ so do whtever you can, Allah will reward you.

However I am scared about two things, one, not all passers by will take it in a good way and some will hurl abuse at you, so you will have to tolerate with patience and secondly, where you will read the Quran there may be music as well and this will become a sort of disrespect so be careful in choosing a place to sit. Don’t sit around an area where there is music and dancing going on.

Also, after some time evaluate your effort, if you feel it is fruitful, continue, otherwise think of something else. Wassalam
